Decay Resistance of Nano-Zinc Oxide, and PEG 6000, and Thermally Modified Wood

In Central Europe, European beech (Fagus sylvatica L.) wood has a high potential for the production of construction and decorative materials, with aim replacing Norway spruce, oaks, other traditionally used tree species. However, biological resistance wood—to decaying fungi, molds, insects—is low, in damp conditions its must be increased suitable preservatives or modification methods. present experiment, was first treated water systems nano-zinc oxide (0.1 to 3.3 wt.% nano-ZnO) and/or polyethylene glycol 6000 (20 PEG 6000), without/with additional thermal at 190 °C/2 h. presence nano-ZnO, decay brown-rot fungus Rhodonia placenta white-rot Trametes versicolor significantly increased, mainly after modification. The nano-ZnO wood—(a) alone, (b) subsequent application 6000, (c) modification—had more apparent inhibition effect on T. than R. placenta. alone did not improve rot.
